Difference between conservation, restoration, and repair

A misconception sometimes arises when “restoration” is understood as a replacement of old or damaged parts with new ones.  It is important to understand the major concepts that stand behind such work methods.

This step-by-step guide presents how we completed a complex restoration project of a 15th-century manuscript volume of Spanish origins, held at the Special Collections. The volume was heavily damaged, and we reconstructed the missing parts with the appropriate methods that were used at that time.

These examples present methods of simple book restoration that we normally do for objects of lower value that do not require a historical reconstruction but can be bound as modern editions.
