DS Artistry Labs Journal - is an attempt to reconstruct our 30-year professional path, to review past experiences, and to look at future goals. Every moment creates our past, which is a constantly evolving collection of experiences, decisions, actions, and moments that shape our future. See details in ABOUT JOURNAL and follow me on this journey "back in time">>>.
The Journal features original research on rare collections, insightful articles, helpful tutorials, enriching art trips and step-by-step workshops covering diverse subjects within related fields. You'll find content in the following categories:
Projects centered around rare collections in various libraries and archives, detailing the journey from initial research and cataloging to public exhibitions. This section also features excerpts from my "Artistic Tours" to these collections, offering descriptions and images of remarkable individual items like beautiful book bindings, original prints, typesetting, calligraphy, and illustrations discovered in different editions.
This series offers educational resources that illustrate the creation of various art forms, books, prints, carvings, and more through detailed step-by-step tutorials; stories of what stands behind the art projects we created, from the initial conceptualization to the technical execution and completion, as well as reports on physical exhibitions in various locations and publications in art journals and specialized catalogs.
By appointment, visitors are welcome to come to our studio to view the original works.
ART JOURNEYS
Travelogue sketches on medieval towns, architecture, museums, galleries, antiquarian and printing fairs, and international book fairs across Europe, including accounts of our bike tours and other fascinating places we've visited, all aimed at engaging readers in exploration and learning. Additionally, this section incorporates artistic elements from our Byzantine journeys, interwoven with the Research category.
Practical tips and lessons in the restoration of diverse decorative art objects, demonstrated through examples of our work with rare woods, sculptures, furniture, books, papers, ivories, and paintings.
PORTRAITS
This series of publications presents the publishing houses, print ateliers, bookshops, antiquarian shops, art galleries, libraries, and museums we have collaborated with. I will also introduce our esteemed teachers who have shaped us professionally, and the talented individuals we have met or worked alongside over the past 30 years, sharing narratives about their extraordinary work and creating a rich tapestry of creativity.
Articles on the history and methodology of bookmaking, traditional printing, the interplay of word and image in books, and historical handwritings, including sketches from my explorations of rare collections in European libraries, interviews with prominent figures, and papers presented at public events and conferences. A special series will chronicle our "Back to Byzantium" expeditions across five countries, studying antique books in libraries and architecture, and explorations of monasteries in the mountains where these books were originally created.
I also provide bibliographies and guidelines relevant to the study of books and prints.
